Protest rally held near the Embassy of Belarus in Riga

Near the building of the Embassy of Belarus in Riga, a picket was held demanding that the authorities of this country release political prisoners and ensure free and fair presidential elections on August 9. This was reported by journalists of the news program Panorama Latvian Television. According to them, about 40 people gathered near the embassy with posters. They wrote demands to stop political repression and violence in Belarus, free elections, etc. Picketers called on the Latvian authorities to publicly condemn the repression in Belarus. The organizer of the picket was Martins Vaivars, a member of the Council of the liberal-nationalist magazine Ir. They arrest (in Belarus) opposition leaders and presidential candidates. More than 100 people were arrested only for expressing their views. If this happened in Latvia, and if no one in the world expressed support for us, we would also not feel very good, Vaivars told reporters. According to the news agency, on June 25, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Belarus, Yuri Karaev, said that the events that take place in Minsk are sometimes aimed at rocking the situation, and under the guise of supposedly peaceful protests and such expressions of disagreement with some actions of the authorities, sometimes a huge danger lurks.
